|DTF Rounds Up 70 Indicted on Drug Charges|

The 15th Judicial Drug Task Force launched Phase II of ‘Operation Clean Sweep’ in Macon County on Wednesday, Jan. 14, by rounding up approximately 70 individuals that have been indicted by a Grand Jury for various drug charges.
Locally, the roundup involved the Lafayette Police Department, the Red Boiling Springs Police Department and the Macon County Sheriffs Department, with the Lafayette PD serving as project headquarters.
Also assisting were officers from the Trousdale County Sheriffs Department, Smith County Sheriffs Department and Carthage Police Department.
“This operation has been in the works for over a year,” remarked a member of the 15th Judicial DTF. “Early on we found out that the Red Boiling Springs Police Department was interested in some of the same people we were after, and the round-up has been a joint effort between us, the Red Boiling Springs Police Department and the Lafayette Police Department.”
Officers from the Macon County Sheriffs Department also assisted in transporting those arrested from the LPD to the county jail.
“It’s amazing to me, but a lot of the people we helped pick up today, have been picked up before. They get caught, do what they have to do to get out of trouble, (pay fines, serve time, probation, etc.) and then as soon as they get out, they go back to doing the same stuff,” one of the participating officers said in a disheartened tone, adding, “But when they do, we will be there to catch them again.”
By 2:30 p.m., on Wednesday, 43 people had been taken to the Lafayette Police Department to be served with their indictment, then immediately taken to the MCSD to begin the process for their incarceration. By the end of the day, around 8:30 p.m., 51 people had been picked up.
‘Operation Clean Sweep’ follows last April’s DTF round-up, dubbed ‘Operation House Call,’ where authorities sought out 50 persons indicted for selling illegal drugs to undercover officers in Macon County.
