On Saturday, April 18th, the Macon County Sheriffs Department responded to a possible shooting on Powell Rd. in Red Boiling Springs.

According to the officer’s report, the frantic caller stated that a man had been shot in the head.

Upon arrival, Officer Kimball Hall observed several people standing in the yard beside the trailer located at 2746 Powell Rd.

After being told the shooting had occurred inside the residence, the officer entered the home and found the victim, Bernado Calles, leaning on a couch with his head resting on an ice pack.

Signaling E.M.S. responders for assistance, Officer Hall then began to search for the weapon and recovered a 12-gauge shotgun lying on another sofa.

After assisting E.M.S. responders with the victim, Hall was told by Calles that his sister-in-law, Emily, had shot him.
Calles went on to explain that he had asked Emily to bring him the rifle on the back porch, where he attempted to shoot a rabbit.

After handing the gun back to her, she took it back into the house, but a few minutes later he heard the gun go off and felt a stinging pain.

Calles stated that he then ran of the porch, around the house to the front door, and inside to the couch, when his wife entered to see what had happened.

The officer’s report stated that Calles was shot across the back and it looked as if two to three pellets had hit him at the base of the skull.

AirEvac was called to the scene and Calles was loaded into the awaiting helicopter.

Detectives then began taking information from those in the yard and blocking off the crime scene area for further investigation.

As of press time, no arrests have been made in the case.
