Nystar Zinc Mine to Increase Production; 300 New Jobs to Open PDF Print E-mail

With the economic downturn still plaguing our country, the prospect of 300 jobs in a neighboring county, is definitely an opportunity for unemployed folks in the surrounding area.

Nystar Zinc Mine, which is a Belgium based company located in Smith County, purchased the Mid-Tennessee Zinc Corporation during federal bankruptcy proceedings earlier this year. MTZ acquired the mine complex in 2006 and it has been on care and maintenance since October of 2008 with 40 employees. The mine complex has a history of close association with Nystar’s Clarksville smelter, which was originally constructed to treat concentrate from the mine complex. According to officials last spring they would recommence operations when the price of zinc increased and during the second week of November the price was just under $2,000 per dry metric ton, and is continuing to rise.

Thanksgiving Fire Destroys Home PDF Print E-mail

A devastating fire, at 809 Wilmore Hollow Road, left Charles Scoggins and his family facing the upcoming holiday season, without a home.

Firefighters from the Red Boiling Springs, Willette and Lafayette Fire Departments were dispatched to the residence at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning, November 25th.

According to Randy Hagan, of RBSFD, who was one of the first responders, the mobile home was already fully involved with flames shooting from the roof and the structure was lit up from one end to the other, when they arrived on the scene.

Macon County Christmas Parade Set for Dec. 5th PDF Print E-mail

Once again, Santa Claus will take time out from his busy schedule at the North Pole to visit Macon County and participate in the annual Christmas Parade to be held on Saturday, December 5th, 2009 beginning at 1:00 p.m.

As in years past, the parade will formally usher in the shopping season here in Middle Tennessee, with Jerry Dallas and Mark Gammons leading the way, as the participants are asked to line up at the Tractor Supply on Highway 52 By Pass East, where the judging will take place at 10:30 a.m. The parade will proceed up the by pass in front of Wal-Mart, turn left at College Street and head to the public square before circling the courthouse and traveling out Highway 10 North. The procession will then take a right on Akersville Road and the parade will disband at the First Assembly of God.

Ward Construction Employee Embezzles $40,000 PDF Print E-mail

The former comptroller of a western Macon County construction company has been charged with stealing approximately $40,000 from her employer in a sealed indictment returned by the Macon County Grand Jury in October.

Mary M. Woodard, 39, of 717 Days Road, Lafayette, was arrested on Saturday, Nov. 14, by Corporal Larry West of the Macon County Sheriff’s Department. She was transported to the Macon County Jail but was later released after posting a $9,500 pre-trial bond.
