Public Servant Floyd Ray Sullivan Passes Away PDF Print E-mail

Floyd Ray Sullivan, an active community member, passed away at the age of 75 on Sunday evening, April 12, at Macon County General Hospital.  
He resided in Siloam on the west side of the county in district 20.   He was a farmer, and served as a Macon County Commissioner for 24 years from 1982 until 2006.

Former County Executive Doyle Gaines stated, “I didn’t know Floyd Ray when I was elected, but we quickly became friends.  Floyd Ray was the epitome of what we look for in a public servant.  He wasn’t just for his section, but for the entire county.  He was an outstanding commissioner.”

Director of Schools Submits Resignation Letter PDF Print E-mail

The regular session of the Board of Education held on Thursday, April 9th, ended with a surprise to many.  Prior to adjourning, Macon County Director of Schools, Darrel Law, submitted a letter of resignation to board members, though at press time on Monday night, April 13th, the board had not accepted his resignation and a meeting, specifically to address the situation was scheduled.

The letter presented to the board states:

“After much consideration, I have decided not to accept another two-year term as Director of Macon County Schools.  I want to thank the central office staff, supervisors, principals, faculty and support staff for their hard work, dedication and support.  I also want to thank the members of the board of education for giving me the opportunity to serve in this capacity and the offer of another two-year term.  I want to thank the Macon County commissioners for funding the school building projects that will improve our schools for the children of Macon County.  I appreciate the working relationship and support the school system has received from the county mayor’s office, as well as all other county agencies.
After working with the Macon County School System for 32 years, I will be retiring as I have other interests and opportunities that I want to pursue as well as spending more time with my family.”

New Election Commission Members Appointed PDF Print E-mail

A new Macon County Election Commission has been appointed by the State Commission with five members making up the new body including Henry Polston and Georgia Ann Boles, who currently serve on the commission and new additions Harold M. (Kenny) Kemp, Jacki Cook, and Glen Harold Donoho.

RBS Mayor Orders Council Member to be Escorted From Meeting PDF Print E-mail

While the April 9th Red Boiling Springs City Council meeting seemed to be rolling along rather smoothly as resolutions were carried and ordinances were adopted, it was the ‘Any Other Business’ item on the agenda that led to a heated discussion between city council member Shelly Dean and City Mayor Kenneth Hollis.
As Dean began to bring up several topics including the broadcast of city meetings on North Central’s local channel, inmates being used strictly for mowing purposes and the hiring of another city employee, a copy of city codes being located at the police department for night shift and weekend officers, hiring a back-up city attorney in the event of attorney Jon Well’s absence, the surveying of city limits, crossing guard duties being carried out by Animal Control Officer Jerry Young instead of city police officers and grants for revamping the city’s downtown area, it was the subject of copy costs that brought on the disagreement.

LPD's New K-9 'Brassy' Prevents Additional Gunfire in Drunken Fight PDF Print E-mail

In December of 2009, the Lafayette Police Department announced the retirement of one of their most loyal officers on patrol, K-9 Leah, a German Shepard who was plagued with a serious back injury, and allowed to spend the remainder of her life with her partner and friend LPD Officer J. Ruiz.
