Mr. Stanley Woodard, age 65 of Pleasant Shade, a decorated Marine Corp veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, died at 5:35 a.m. Monday morning June 16, 2008 surrounded by his family at his Sloan Branch Road home after a 15 month battle with cancer.

Mr. Woodard’s services were conducted by Eld. Charles Allen Gentry on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial with military honors by the United States Marine Corp Honor Guard followed in the Smith County Memorial Gardens.

The son of Mrs. Irene Abney Woodard of Elmwood and the late James Monroe Woodard, he was one of their three children and was born James Stanley Woodard in the Elmwood Community on October 4, 1942.

On February 2, 1964 in Jacksonville, North Carolina he was married to the former Frances June Hiett who survives.

Mr. Woodard retired from Vought Aircraft in Nashville in May of 2006 after a career of twenty-four years of service. He had also worked at Benward, Inc., The Rogers Group, and the Hartsville Nuclear Plant.

He attended Smith County High School and received his General Education Degree while serving our country during the Vietnam Conflict.

In March of 1964 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Lejune in North Carolina. In November of 1964 he was deployed to Vietnam where he served until December of 1965. His total overseas service was one year, one month and eighteen days.

During his Marine service he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the M-14 Rifle Marksman Badge, the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal. Mr. Woodard served as a Lance Corporal with the Third Engineering Battalion, Third Marine Division.

He received an Honorable Discharge on April 1, 1970.

Mr. Woodard was of the Methodist faith and was saved during a tent revival in 1961.

Surviving in addition to his mother and his wife of 44 years are three children, Mike Woodard and wife Dana of Gordonsville, Bobbie Smith of Club Springs, and Randy Petty and wife Pat of Lafayette. He is also survived by two sisters, Donnie Sue Kent and husband Billy of South Carthage, Brenda Barnette of Elmwood; seven grandchildren, Roger, Brian, Kimberly, Hali, Hunter, Andrew and Dane; four great-grandchildren; Kealy, Kiara, Kevin and Jacky.
