James Edward Smalling, was born in Macon County, Tennessee on February 28, 1937 to the late Fred Smalling, and Flossie Rulene Cook Smalling. He was one of three siblings born to this union. Besides his parents, one brother, Donald Wayne Smalling also preceded James in death. As a young boy, James was saved as he knelt in the floor in front of the mourner’s bench at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. He married the love of his life, the former Hazel Halliburton on November 3, 1956. They have two daughters, Kathy and Deborah; that James adored. James and Hazel shared fifty-six wonderful years together. James worked as a mechanic most of his life, he retired in 2009. Whether sitting on a boat or on the creek bank, fishing was what James truly enjoyed, as long as his health permitted. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. James loved going to his grandkids ballgames, and he enjoyed watching racing and sports on television. On Monday, April 29, 2013 the Lord called James home. There will be an empty spot left in the lives’ of Hazel and the family, but our loss is Heaven’s Gain. Funeral Services for James Smalling were conducted Thursday at 2 PM from the Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home with Elder Daniel Cook and Elder J. E. Shoulders officiating. Keith Kirby, Jerry Cook, Doyle Pruitt, Bud Cook, Chris Gregory, and Jerry Strode served as Pallbearers. Interment followed in the Galen Cemetery. James is survived by; Wife, Hazel Smalling of Lafayette, TN, Daughters, Kathy (Terry) Law of Gallatin, TN, and Deborah Kirby of Lafayette, TN, Grandsons, Andy Goad and Daniel (Miranda) Cook all of Pleasant Shade, TN, and Keith Kirby of Lebanon, TN, Great-Granddaughters, Mia Cook and Maci Cook both of Pleasant Shade, TN, and Sister, Versie (Garlin) Dotson of Somerset, KY.

Elsa L. (Hickman) Taylor, 89, of Greenfield, passed away Monday, April 15, 2013 at Hancock Regional Hospital. She was born on March 7, 1924 in Macon County, TN to the late Orna M. and Cora (Sailors) Hickman. She retired in 1984 as an assembler at Western Electric. She was a member of Rocky Mound Missionary Baptist Church in Westmoreland, TN. Surviving her is her brother; Charles (Mary) Hickman of Indianapolis and several nieces and nephews. She is proceeded in death by her husband; Leonard Taylor, son; Charles Horace Taylor, parents; sisters; Irene Creed and Vina Whittemore. Visitation will be held at Bell Mortuary & Crematory, Shangrila Chapel on Saturday, April 20, 2013 from 11:00 am-1:00 pm with Service at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at New Palestine Cemetery. Mary Margaret Moss Vinson, age 97, of Red Boiling Springs, TN  passed away Saturday morning, April 20, 2013 at the Macon County General Hospital  in Lafayette, TN. Funeral Services for Mary Margaret Moss Vinson were conducted Tuesday morning, April 23, 2013 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of the Anderson & Son Funeral Home in Red Boiling Springs, TN with Neel Smith officiating. Interment followed in the Whitley Cemetery.  Her grandsons served as pallbearers. Mary Margaret was born October 24, 1915 in Macon County, Tennessee, one of four siblings born to the late Bill and Cornell Cloyd Moss. On August 19, 1961, she married James Vinson, who preceded her in death on December 16, 2001. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Bertha Nell Turner Dodd, grandson, Max Bailey, sister, Willalea Tyler and brothers, Comus and Evan Moss. Mary Margaret was the former Librarian for the Red Boiling Springs Branch Library with 37 years of service. She always greeted people with her winning smile and a twinkle in her eye. She attended the Red Boiling Springs Church of Christ. Survivors include: daughters, Mary Lea Bailey, Indianapolis, IN, Margaret Ann Burnett, Louisville, KY, Martha Crowder, Nashville, TN, son & daughter-in-law, John & Jeanette Jackson, Lynchburg, VA, brother-in-law, Joe Vinson, Red Boiling Springs, TN, 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Brockette Kirkland, age 69, of Hendersonville and formerly of the Russell Hill Community in Macon County, TN passed away Sunday morning, April 7, 2013 at the Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Funeral Services for Ruth Brockette Kirkland were conducted Wednesday afternoon, April 10, 2013 at 1 p.m. from the chapel of the Anderson & Son Funeral Home in Red Boiling Springs, TN with Father Jeff Jones officiating. Interment followed in the Patterson Cemetery. Her pallbearers were Bryan Grissom, Scott Grissom, Josh Grissom, Phillip Brockette, Jimmy Brockett and Harold Brockett.  
Ruth was born Tuesday, June 15, 1943 in Macon County, Tennessee, one of three siblings born to the late Willard and Willa Dean Glover Brockette. She was married to Dr. David Kirkland, who preceded her in death. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her son, Danny Smith and brother, Paul Brockette. Ruth served as the former medical office manager for the Westside Chiropractor Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida for several years. She was a member of the First Naivety Episcopal Church also in Jacksonville, Florida.  Ruth lived every day to its fullest. She loved her children, grandchildren, friends and to travel.  She had a terrific personality to brighten everyone’s day.
Survivors include: daughters & sons-in-law, Shawanna & Mike Jenkins, Red Boiling Springs, Samantha & Jim Smith, Hendersonville, Simona Thomas, Clarksville, grandchildren, Janet Strode and husband, Chris, Murfreesboro, Darrell Smith, Hendersonville, Chiann and Judson Thomas, Clarksville, great-grandson, Christian Strode, Murfreesboro, sister & brother-in-law, Dorothy & Gary Grissom, Gallatin, sister-in-law, Shelia Brockette, Lafayette and a host of nieces and nephews.

Agnes Maurine Hagan, 78, of Lafayette, Tn died 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at her residence. The Harts, West Virginia native was a homemaker, former employee of Auto Bolt and Nut in Cleveland, OH, singer with the Hagan Family, former Sunday School teacher in Ohio and attended Liberty United General Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Frank Mullins, Sr. and Ruth Elaine McCloud Mullins Farley.
