RBS Jr. High Football

The Red Boiling Springs Junior High School Bulldog
Football team hosted Burkes Middle School of Monterey last Thursday evening,
for a wet gridiron competition.

After forcing the visitors to punt, the Bulldogs were
able to score a touchdown on a quarterback pass from Tyler Carlisle to halfback
Seth Carlisle. The two-point conversion was achieved by Seth, giving the
Bulldogs an early 8-0 lead.

Tyler Carlisle intercepted a Monterey pass in the middle
of the second quarter, in hopes of continuing the advantage, however the
Bulldogs were forced to hand the ball back over. The game quickly changed in
favor of the visitors, with a Bulldog pass being intercepted by Monterey to end
the second quarter. Returning from the halftime break, the Bulldogs were forced
to punt, and with 3:35 marking the clock, Monterey broke through the middle of
the line for their first score of the night. Burkes Middle school was held
throughout the rest of the third quarter, however they opened the last quarter
of play with their second score of the night. No team was able to advance any
further. Final score… Monterey 16, RBS 8.

“It was a very
difficult loss. I was very proud of our boys’ efforts though,” commented
Coach West. “I really hate to let one slip away at the end like
that–especially with how hard they worked to put themselves in
position to be successful. I feel we need to continue to improve in
some areas to give ourselves a better opportunity to win. We continue to
blow good opportunities with penalties and turnovers. As a
result of penalties, bad snaps, and blown assignments–we have finished
with two poor offensive performances in a row. A lot of emphasis will be
put on penalties this week in practice. I was pleased with some of the
progress we made leading into the game though. I think we really made a lot of
improvement on defense–especially in the first half. I felt we did a much
better job this week of coming out aggressive and setting the tone at the
beginning. Jeffrey Nelson continues to be a force out there for teams to
deal with.  He finished with 6 tackles–3 for loss. He was the
Lineman Player of the Game. Seth Carlisle was the Skill Player of the
Game. He finished with 32 yards rushing, 18 yards passing & 1 TD,
punted 4 times for a 21.5 yard average, and finished with 5 tackles and forced
a fumble. Billy York received the Hammer Award for his bone crushing hit
on the second kick-off.

“We look to “right the ship” next
Thursday night as we host Algood Middle School, he added. “They are a very
good football team. They seem to be on a roll and having a good
season. It will be a good test for us because I’m interested to see
how we respond to Thursday’s tough loss. I would like to thank God
for these boys, their families, and the progress we’ve made so far–and most of
all for watching over us and keeping us injury free. I also would
like to thank all the fans and parents that have been so devoted and involved.
I appreciate their help and support and look forward to seeing a lot of people
up on “The Ridge” Thursday night.  Game time is set at 6:30 PM.”
