Clay County Girls Roll Over Lady Bulldogs
By Wally Etheridge
The Clay County Lady Bulldogs paid their annual visit to the Dog Pound in Red Boiling Springs last Tuesday night and the defeat they hung on Red Boiling Springs will last a long time in the memory of Red Boiling Springs fans everywhere.
A 55-30 victory for the kids from Clay County was not totally unexpected since this is a big up year for Clay County while Red Boiling Springs is going thru somewhat of a rebuilding year having lost to graduation of some great players the last few years.
Clay County put their full court in your face defense on display from the from the very beginning and with a much taller and very quick starting 5 they were able to force turnover after turnover and never did allow the Lady Bulldogs to execute their offense and the end result was a 25-5 lead for the visitors after the end of the first quarter.
Coach Joe Sims of Clay County went to his bench in the second quarter as did Lady Bulldog Coach Larry White and the Lady Bulldogs still found themselves trailing at halftime 38-13. Lady Bulldog scoring in the first half was 9 points by Morgan Burgener plus 2 points from Kelsey Jenkins and 2 free throws from Kaitlyn McCarter.
Something very unusual happened in the third quarter that surprised some fans as both teams managed only 4 points each. The defense played by both teams was great so maybe the Lady Bulldogs had found something to hang their hats on. Those fourth quarter points were scored by Morgan Burgener with 3, while Kaitlyn McCarter added a free throw.
With the outcome of this game no longer in doubt and with both teams having emptied their benches the Lady Bulldogs were putting up some points but the Clay County reserves were scoring also thus resulting in both teams scoring 13 points each in the fourth quarter for a final score of 55-30 in favor of Clay County. Scoring for the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth quarter were-Kristin Davis with 3 points while Katie Hix and Kalisha Lynch also scored 3 points each. Mayson Burgener and MacKenzie Sadler each had a basket.
The Red Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs did not play a terrible game as in Clay County having a great night. There will be better nights for these kids.
The Lady Bulldogs will welcome Brent Smith and his Pickett County Bobcats to the Dog Pound on Friday night and Saturday finds Whitwell coming to RBS.
