RBS Boys Win Close on over Webb School
By: Wally Etheridge
In a game that the Bulldogs really needed to get a win they played just well enough against The Webb School to bring home a very hard fought win by a score of 56 to 49.
The game was much closer than the score indicates. The Webb School boys put up a hard fight in a sloppy game where the fourth quarter was the best of the night.
It's homecoming and the gym is full of kids from first grade thru the seniors and flashbulbs going off in all directions but it was the Bulldogs would make the most noise when the final 3 minutes were played out.
Seniors Matt Brockette and Cody Dickens along with 2 other seniors in Erin Francis and Matt French sparked the Bulldogs in the first half by scoring 25 of the Bulldogs 28 points at half-time. They also played great team defense and along with David Williams the Bulldogs were clinging to a 1-point lead, 28-27, over The Webb school.
Ty Tuck also came in off the bench to score 2 big points and help clog up the middle where the Bulldogs were getting beat time after time by a very athletic team. Matt French knocked down 2 long 3-pointers to start the third quarter and Matt Brockette and Erin Francis also had a 3-pointer each as the Bulldog opened up a 7-point lead heading into the last quarter, 41-34.
The Bulldogs play got sloppy and The Webb School took advantage by scoring 8 points early in the fourth quarter while the Bulldogs managed only 2 points during this stretch and the Bulldogs were down to 2 points at 43-41.
Bulldog coach Michael Owens called time to change his offense and it worked as the Bulldogs started going to the rack and this paid off big time with Cody Dickens and Erin Francis scored the next 10 points and Bulldog center David Williams made two big baskets in the paint and the Boys from The Webb School had made their run, but it was not good enough on this night, and Red Boiling Springs took home a homecoming victory 56-49.
One thing that almost cost the Bulldogs a victory was their free throw shooting missing 7 free throws in a span of a little over 5 minutes. I think that they are going to be working on their free throw this week as Friendship Christian comes calling Tuesday night. Very big district 8A game against the Commanders. See you there.
