Tigerettes Drop First District Game
By Mark Darnell
The MCHS Tigerettes were handed their first district loss of the season by the Goodpasture Cougars. Macon faced Hume Fogg earlier in the week.
On Jan 24th, Macon Co. hosted Hume Fogg. The Tigerettes quickly jumped out to a ten point lead, in part to two long-range 3s by Kailyn Brooks. The pressure of the Tigerettes created turnover after turnover and by halftime the contest was decided. At the half Macon led 43-11. Once again Coach Beam was able to get a lot of quality playing time from his bench. The bench held the Cougars to only two points in the 4th quarter as Macon goes on to win by a score of 73-23.
Scoring were: Kelsey Gregory 2, Kailyn Brooks 12, Terra Pryor 8, Katie Reid 9, Calamity Coley 18, Katelyn Bean 5, Reece Shrum 6, Briley Driver 2, Leah Anderson 2, Alyssa Tuck 2, Macy Kemp 3, Jade Ellis 2, and Michaela Thompson 2. Whitney Wilburn played hard and had a shot at the buzzer, but did not score.
On Jan. 27th, the first and second place teams in District 9AA faced off. Both teams played good defense and at the end of the first period Macon led 13-11. The Tigerettes didn’t seem to be in sink and poor shooting by the Cougars (7 of 19 in the 2nd) kept the contest close. At the half MCHS trailed 25-26. Goodpasture came out on a mission in the third and capitalized on every mistake by the Tigerettes. It didn’t help that Lady Luck was nowhere to be seen as Macon couldn’t seem to even buy one little break. Tigerettes trail 35-44 at the end of three going 4 of 14 from the field. The Tigerettes cut into the lead but couldn’t make up the entire deficit. When you combine the cold shooting by Macon (8 of 20 from the field in the 4th and 3 of 10 from behind the arc), with the driven play of Goodpasture, and the nonexistence of Lady Luck, the fate of the Tigerettes was sealed. The final score was Goodpasture 58 MCHS 57.
Scoring were: Gregory 4, Brooks 12, Pryor 3, Reid 7, Coley 26, Bean 2, and Driver 3.
The Tigerettes have three games this week. They travel to Sycamore on Monday and Greenbrier on Tuesday before coming home to face Sycamore on Friday February 3rd. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m.
