MACON, Ga. – Belmont men’s track and field sophomore Caleb Darnell earned Academic All-Conference distinction, as announced by the Atlantic Sun on Friday.

It is the first time in his career he has received the honor. He and sophomore Tyler Newkirk were the only Bruins selected to the thirteen member squad.

Darnell, who was one of seven unanimous selections, competed in four outdoor meets, notching four top-14 finishes during the season. The Lafayette, Tenn., native opened the outdoor season at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, taking 14th in 400m Hurdles (57.39). His season-best finish was fourth place in 400m in season-best 55.60 at the 2012 Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships. Darnell also took fifth in 400m Hurdles at the Bellarmine Invitational and placed 12th in 400m Hurdles at Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational.

The A-Sun introduced the new sport-by-sport Academic All-Conference teams this fall to recognize student-athletes who embody the conference’s mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better and participated in at least half of their team’s games.
