My View from the Press Box – Goodpasture

The MCHS Tigers lose their home opener last Thursday night against the Goodpasture Cougars 36-16. 

The Cougars score first midway through the 1st quarter to take the lead 7-0. The Tigers answer back with a 37 yard field goal by Zach Ghazi to make the score 7-3.  With :37 left in the half the Cougars get a 27 yard field goal from Nic Adamopolous to make the score 10-3.  Aaron Carter fumbled the ensuing kick-off at his own 8 yard line and Ryan Atkinson picked it up and scored  with :18 seconds remaining in the half. Halftime score: 16-6 Cougars. 

In the 3rd quarter Goodpasture scored on a 1 yard touchdown run to make the score 22-3. With 1:46 remaining in the third Caleb Pedigo scored on a 44 yd interception return and the 2pt play was no good.  Tigers trailed 22-9.  With 11:31 to go in the fourth Carter was picked off at the 10 yard line by Reed who returned it 90 yards for a touchdown for Goodpasture to make the score 29-9.  The Cougars scored again with 8:05 remaining to pull ahead 36-9.  With 2:34 left in the game Carter scored the Tigers first offensive TD of the season on a 45 yard option run.  Ghazi added the PAT to make the final score 36-16. 

Coach Smith said after the game “There is no quit in us.  If we can eliminate some mistakes we will compete with anybody. But I love the effort these guys gave tonight.  We will continue to work hard and get better as a team.” 

The Tigers are 0-3 on the season  0-1 in district play.  They will be off this week and will travel to Pleasant View next Friday night to take in district foe Sycamore.  Come out and support the Tigers and “I’ll see you at the game.”
