Relay for Life This Friday Night, June 7th

As the American Cancer Society celebrates 100 years, help us celebrate this jubilee by attending the Macon County Relay For Life event at Key Park this Friday night, June 7, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

One of the world’s largest fund-raising movements, Relay unites communities as they celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and provides participants with an opportunity to fight this disease that is taking innocent lives.

The anticipation is heightening for a night that we open will go down in Relay history, and former news anchor & TV personality Terri Merryman promises to bring spirit as well as honor to this year’s event.

We want to stress that our cancer survivors have always offered a message of hope to all of us and it is important for them, as well as anyone else touched by this dreaded disease, to know that we are all working toward the day when the words “you have cancer” are not longer in our vocabulary.

With a variety of activities planned and exciting musical entertainment by the “Shoo B Doos”, we want this to be a night to remember.

This year’s committee members are: Lisa Yokley, Leigh Anne Duncan, Brownie Barton, Debbie Gregory, Lori Jones, Connie Blackwell, Diane Cook, and Jeff Duncan.

This year’s teams are: Walmart, Walgreens, Citizens Bank, Macon Bank & Trust, NCTC, Measure Up, Macon County General Hospital, Hillwood Helpers, MCHS Interact Club, Nestle Waters, Dodson Farms, Holy Family Catholic Church, Cobb Vantress, and Tamar Coley & Friends.

“The teams will take turns walking or running around the track with the common goal of eliminating this disease that threatens our very existence,” said Chairman Lisa Yokley. “Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the six hour event. Those who have shared the same experience find common ground, and it is also a great way for people to meet other survivors in our community.”

The open ceremonies will begin at 6:00 p.m. by Leigh Anne Duncan, followed by the invocation. Lindsay Kenyon will sing the National Anthem. Team introductions will by by Terri Merryman at 6:10 p.m. followed by the banner parade. At 6:15 p.m. MaKinley Smith & Kayla Jackson will take the stage and the Survivors Walk will begin at 7:00 p.m. The Shoo B Doos will take the stage from 7:30-8:15 p.m. and team activity will begin following the bands first set. The Shoo B Doos will entertainment again from 8:30 till 8:55 p.m. and the Luminaria Ceremony/Remembrance walk is at 9:00 p.m. The Shoo B Doos will hit the stage again at 9:15 and play until 10:00 p.m. From 11:00 till 12:00 we will celebrate, party and give out the awards.

“Relay for Life is a great way for Macon County to demonstrate it’s commitment to fighting this disease,” said Yokley, “so please join us at Key Park on Friday night, June 7, and help us prove we are making progress in this battle.”

We’ve worked hard this year, so come on out and enjoy a night of food, fun and entertainment. And most of all help us send cancer a message, that is hasn’t defeated us, it has just made us stronger.”
