Joey Wilburn has been hired as the new Band and Choir Director at Macon County High School. He replaces Shawn Mitterhalzer, who is moving on to work with the band at Gallatin High School.

Mr. Wilburn is coming home to lead students at MCHS. He is the son of Dean and Carolyn Wilburn and is a 2001 MCHS graduate. Joey participated in the marching band for six years while playing the trombone. He is married to Tracie Wilburn and has a four month old daughter named Lily Kate.

“I am excited to come back home and continue the tradition of the band at Macon County High School,” Wilburn said. “I am also pleased to see that we have a strong group of students and that the program has continued to grow since my time here.”

Wilburn will be teaching music appreciation, band, and choir this year. For the past four years he has been the Assistant Band Director at Dekalb County High School, who has a large and thriving band.

“Our show this fall will be entitled ‘Journey of Man’ and should provide listeners with a lot of fun music that they should recognize and enjoy hearing,” said Joey.

Wilburn was hired as of last week and is already at work with the Tiger Band in summer camp last week. Macon County Director of Schools Margaret Oldham confirmed the hire after a good number of applicants applied for the position.
