Sometimes it just isn’t your day. For the third time in the Senior Little League Division tournament, Smith County defeated Lafayette, eliminating them from the postseason.
Previously in the District 4 tournament, Smith County had beaten Lafayette twice. The first game Lafayette lost by two runs, the second by ten. Both teams would meet again, on Tuesday July 23rd, in the loser’s bracket of the Senior League Division of the State Little League Tournament held here in Lafayette this week.
Smith County jumped out to an early lead of 6-0 thru 3 ½ innings. In the bottom of the 4th, singles by Jessie Gregory and Clay Carnahan were followed by a third by Austin Herbert, scoring two runs. Lafayette would strand three runners at the end of the inning but only trailed 2-6 through 4 innings. Again in the bottom of the 5th, Kristopher Boone singled while Jessie Gregory hit a two run homer to bring the score to 4-6 at the end of five. Smith County would tack on two runs in the 6th and one more in the 7th and go on to win by a final score of 9-4. Nothing to hang your head over, Lafayette just got out hit and nothing seemed to want to fall their way.
With the loss, this ends the season for the Lafayette squad. Congratulations on a great season and making it to the state tournament.
