Fire Destroys Stock Yard Pole Barn

The fire call came in around 3:00 a.m. and twenty firefighters, Chief Keith Scruggs and Assistant Fire Chief Troy Brawner were dispatched to the scene. “We utilized three trucks and we also used our new large diameter hose,” said the Chief. “The hose was very effective.”

“The pole barn was fully involved when we arrived,” said Scruggs, “but we were able to save the $70,000 cattle trailer that was next to the barn. Barry Newberry was able to pull the trailer away from the fire, however it did sustained minimal damage.”

The livestock market is owned by Stacey Browning. When Mr. Browning was contacted on Monday afternoon, he stated that the estimated loss was $60,000. “That includes the barn, hay and the damage to the cattle trailer,” he said.

The original of the fire is unknown.

First responders were the Lafayette Fire Department, Lafayette Police Department, Macon County Sheriffs Office, Macon County EMS and the Macon County Chronicle.

“We’ve had a very busy week at the Fire Department, including structure fires, car fires, grass and wood fires,” added the Chief. “There were 14 fires in the last seven days. The department has done very well and we have met the challenges
