Former Macon County Nonprofit Treasurer Indicted
At the request of 15th District Attorney General Tommy Thompson, TBI Special Agents began investigating Christopher Phillips on April 21, 2014. During the course of the investigation, Agents developed information that from March 2011 through February 2014, Phillips, while serving as Treasurer of the Macon County Sports Hall of Fame, the Lafayette Lions Club, and the Macon County High School Class of 1983, diverted funds from each of nonprofits to his personal bank account. Phillips maintained his account and those of the three nonprofits at Macon Bank & Trust, at which he was also employed. He subsequently resigned when the allegations surfaced following the bank’s annual audit in 2014.
On February 9th, the Macon County Grand Jury returned indictments for the 49-year-old, charging him with one count of Theft over $500, one count of Theft over $1,000, and one count of Theft over $10,000. Today, he was booked into the Macon County Jail and subsequently released after posting $3,000 bond.
