Medicine Drop Box Located at Sheriff’s Office

Sheriff Mark Gammons stated that he has been working with the Smith County Drug Coalition and the State of Tennessee to acquire the drop box for our area.

“It’s our hope that by providing a safe place to dispose of these medicines we will keep them out of the hands of children, who could potentially be harmed by them, and prevent prescription drug related thefts,” the sheriff said.

Items accepted at the drop box include: prescription medications, over the counter medications, pet medications, medicated ointment, lotions or drugs, liquid medicines, inhalers and pills in any packages.

Illegal drugs, needles, thermometers, blood sugar equipment, bloody or infectious waste, IV bags and personal care items will not accepted.

“Once the bin is full, all of the items will be taken to Cookeville, where they will be incinerated,” said the sheriff.

These disposal bins are part of a project sponsored by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
