Snyder Pleads Guilty, Taken Into Custody

Steven Snyder

Steven Snyder, of Lafayette, was taken into custody on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, in Trousdale County, after the former teacher pled before Judge Brody Kane in a Hartsville courtroom to sex charges involving minors in Trousdale and Macon County.

When contacted by telephone last week, Assistant District Attorney Javin Cripps told the Macon County Chronicle that the 25-year-old accused man pled guilty to two counts of statutory rape by an authority figure and one count of sexual contact with a minor in the Macon County charges. He pled guilty to two counts of sexual battery by an authority figure in the Trousdale County charges.

According to ADA Cripps, Snyder was sentenced to 10 years to serve as a Range 1 offender, and placed on the Sex Offender Registry (to follow all sex offender registry directives). “He must serve 30 percent of his sentence before he will be eligible for parole,” Cripps said.

“As part of Snyder’s plea agreement, he was taken into custody the day he pled to the charges,” said ADA Cripps, adding, “All the parents of the victims understood the plea and agreed with it.”

In a February, 2015 edition of the Macon County Chronicle it was reported that former educator and Lafayette resident, Steven C. Synder, had been indicted in Trousdale and Macon County amid allegations of sexual misconduct. Snyder turned himself in on February 23 to authorities.

Snyder reported to the Trousdale County Sheriffs Department and was booked on ten counts of sexual battery by an authority figure and eight counts of solicitation of a minor. Authorities in Macon County booked Snyder on 12 counts of statutory rape by an authority figure and one count of sexual exploitation of a minor. He posted bond, which was set at $10,000 in Trousdale County and his bond in Macon County was also set at $10,000.

Snyder is a former educator in Macon County and Trousdale County.

Trousdale County Director of Schools, Clint Satterfield, stated last year that a student had reported inappropriate actions to a staff member, who immediately reported to the principal. The principle reported the allegations to the Director of Schools and the school district immediately contacted local law enforcement and the Department of Children’s Services.

According to Satterfield, Mr. Snyder was suspended without pay on February 3rd, and submitted his formal letter of resignation on February 9th, 2015.

Trousdale County Sheriff Ray Russell said that the investigation began with one of his detectives, who later contacted the TBI. That investigation led to further actions in Macon County.

Steven Snyder graduated from Macon County High School in 2009.
