A former Macon County woman, and 1980 MCHS graduate, is dead following a murder/suicide incident that happened on Wednesday, September 7th, in Jefferson County, Tenn.

Deceased at the scene was the murder victim 54-year-old Rebecca Kay Harris Gibson, formerly of Macon County, and her husband, 55-year-old Thomas Gibson, who turned the gun on himself  after allegedly killing his wife.

Jefferson County Sheriff G.W. “Bug” McCoig was contacted last week and he told the Macon County Chronicle that Mr. Thomas Gibson called 911 on Wednesday night, September 7, and said that he had shot his wife.

“When officers from my department arrived at the Lebanon Road residence around 8:30 p.m.,” said Sheriff McCoig, “they found Mr. Gibson lying in the front yard with a self inflicted gunshot wound.”

“Officers then entered the residence where they found Mrs. Gibson, who had been shot multiple times,” said the Sheriff.

“This is a sad situation,” commented Sheriff McCoig. “My department has never had any calls from that home, domestic or otherwise. However, there was some indication at the scene that the couple was in counseling.”

The weapon used in the shooting was a 9-mm semi-automatic handgun which was found at the scene.

Rebecca Kay Harris Gibson is survived by her mother, Mrs. Carol Draper, of Lafayette.
