Couple Leaves $356,990.26 to Macon Schools

By Jessie Williams

Family members of the late Kathleen and Otto Wheeley presented a $356,990.26 check to the Macon County School System last Tuesday, May 2, to be used for scholarships.

Mr. and Mrs. Wheeley passed away a couple of years ago and the family has been finalizing their estates.

As requested in their will, they desired to make a contribution to the Macon County School System in the amount of $356,990.26 to be restricted to be used for scholarships for deserving Macon County High School graduates to attend the University of Tennessee or Belmont University.

The will further states that the students shall be decided upon by the Macon County School Board and its faculty. Director of Schools Tony Boles stated that a scholarship board would include members of the Wheeley family, who will help choose the students.

The scholarships will be distributed for the first time next year.

Kathleen and Otto Wheeley were graduates of Macon County High School in the 1930’s and loved the people and the work being done in the system’s education efforts.

They have always considered Macon County home, and chose Macon County as their final resting place.
