LPD Traffic Stop: Two Arrested
By Debbie Gregory
The Lafayette Police Department arrested two people on drug charges after a traffic stop for an expired vehicle registration on June 25.
LPD Officer Derek Carlisle was on patrol when he saw a blue Ford van crossing the intersection of Ellington Drive and Highway 52 By Pass West with an expired vehicle registration. Upon initiating a traffic stop in the parking lot of Cato clothing store, the officer got out of his patrol car and walked up to the driver’s side of the vehicle. The driver was identified as 35-year-old Latisha Irene Oliver of Lafayette.
According to Officer Carlisle’s report, Officer Jordan arrived on the scene to assist and he approached the passenger’s side, which was occupied by 58-year-old Ricky Kent Gregory, also of Lafayette. Officer Jordan saw in plain view a marijuana pipe laying in the ash tray of the vehicle.
The driver and passenger were asked to exit the vehicle while a search was conducted. Three small clear bags were found with what appeared to be a white crystal substance inside, which tested positive for methamphetamine. There was also a red container found inside a purse that contained one Oxycodone tablet, one Hydrocodone tablet, two Diazepam tablets, and a small piece of green leafy substance which appeared to be marijuana. There was a small tin found near the center console which contained a grinder with green leafy material inside it. There was a glass pipe found which had a white crystal substance inside it and a small metal pipe was found which appeared to be used to smoke marijuana. There was also a hard brown substance inside a piece of plastic which could not be identified at that time.
A cylinder shaped object with a fuse was located in a purse that belonged to Latisha Oliver. The object appeared to be home made with a cardboard covering on the outside, and the top and bottom of the object was put together with plastic caps and hot glue. The item appeared to be a homemade explosive device with a cannon fuse being deployed from one end. The THP Bomb Disposal Unit was notified of the object and it was safely disposed of.
Latisha Irene Oliver was placed under arrest and charged with driving while in possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, manufacture of narcotics, possession of a schedule II drugs (3 counts), possession of a schedule IV drug, possession of a schedule VI drug, prohibited weapon, and violation of registration. Bond is set at $13,100. A General Sessions Court date is scheduled for July 24.
