Drag Racing: MCHS Teenager Killed

A Macon County teenager was killed and his passenger injured following a tragic drag racing wreck on Long Creek Road, near the Johnson Road intersection, on Friday night, June 22.
The deceased has been identified as 17-year-old Eli Borders and his passenger was 17-year-old Corey Cramer.
According to the report filed by Trooper Adam Cothron, of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Borders was driving a 1999 Dodge pickup when he began drag racing with another truck on Long Creek Road. He suddenly ran off the right side of the road and struck a driveway culvert. The vehicle crossed back over to the opposite side of the roadway, struck a tree, and traveled down a creek bank where it came to rest. Both Borders and Cramer were ejected from the vehicle. Neither teenager was wearing a seatbelt.
The speed limit on Long Creek Road is posted at 55.
Both teenagers were transported for medical treatment and Eli Borders passed away on Saturday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
Eli Borders would have been a senior at Macon County High School next year.
Funeral services for Mr. Eli Borders, of Lafayette, are scheduled to be conducted on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at 1 p.m. from the Macon County High School Gymnasium with Brother Lionel Borders, Brother Jeremy Yokley, and Brother Larry “Bubba” Meador officiating. Interment will follow in the New Hope Church Cemetery in Westmoreland.
