Structure Fire at Stockyard

The Lafayette Fire Department was called to the Browning Livestock Market, located at 904 Scottsville Road, at 12:28 a.m. on Thursday, June 28, after Sgt. Jeff Tucker, of the Lafayette Police Department, spotted a fire while on patrol.

 

According to Fire Chief Troy Brawner, when they arrived they found a  50 x 80 pole barn on fire and 23 firefighters quickly began to battle the flames.    

With damages estimated in the thousands, Chief Brawner said that a storm came through about an hour and a half before the fire was spotted. “A lightning strike is suspected to have started the fire, which originated in the attic,” explained Chief Brawner.

“Thanks to Sgt. Tucker spotting the fire and the tireless effort of the Lafayette firefighters, we saved the majority of the stock barn,” said the Chief.

The Lafayette Fire Department utilized two fire engines, a tanker, and a support truck. The firefighters were on the scene till 3:37 a.m.

Rita Browning, of Red Boiling Springs, is the owner of the livestock market.

Those responding to the scene were the Lafayette Fire Department, Lafayette Police Department, Macon County Sheriffs Department, Macon County EMS, and the Macon County Chronicle.

The next regular stock sale will be on July 18.
