Man Jailed for Vehicle Break-Ins, Drugs

By Jessie Williams

A Lafayette man was jailed last week for stealing items from two vehicles valued at approximately $5,000.

According to Detective Kevin Templeton, a call was received during the early morning hours of Thursday, August 9, regarding stolen property from a vehicle on Maple Grove Road.

The victim stated that he was leaving to go to his job site, when he noticed items were missing from his toolbox and trailer.

Detective Templeton and Deputy Kyle Petty responded to the scene, and spoke with the victim and possible witnesses.

During their investigation, they also learned items were stolen from a second vehicle located at a nearby residence.

The stolen items included an air compressor, hand tools and various power tools.

After conducting interviews, they were given the name of a suspect – Stephen Vaughn Bailey, and a description of his vehicle. A short time later they learned he was passed out in his vehicle in the Lafayette Walmart store parking lot.

When authorities searched the vehicle, most of the stolen items were recovered.

Scales, a smoking pipe, a snorting straw and 1.3 grams of meth were also found inside Bailey’s vehicle.

Bailey was charged with theft of property, possession of a schedule II drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal trespassing. His bond was set at $7,500, and he’s scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on September 5.

Additional charges are pending, and this case remains under investigation.
