Macon Basketball has Busy Week

The basketball teams at Macon County High School had a busy week and began their Christmas tournaments.

On Tuesday Dec 11th Macon hosted 8AA opponent Livingston. The Tigerettes got off to a slow start, leading 11-10 at the end of the 1st period. However they got the scoring cranked-up and led 37-18 at the break. They coasted to a 67-37 win shooting 26 of 52 (50%) from the field and were 9 for 9 from the free throw line.

Scoring was: Jalynn Gregory 18, Keeley Carter 13, Jamie Ashburn 11, Abby Shoulders 11, Marah King 10, Taylor Ward 2, and McKaylee Mix 2. Myle Crowder, Kinsley Arnett, Emily Ashburn, Bria Crouch, and Graci Scott all played but did not score.

The Wildcats have always given the Tigers a tough game. Despite only scoring nine points in the 1st quarter, the Tigers led 28-23 at the break. They pushed that lead out to 41-33 at the end of the 3rd period. However strong play from the Wildcats tied the game and sent in into overtime. Macon picked a bad time to go dry and couldn’t muster any scoring losing 58-50.

Scoring was: Kelton Ballou 12, Clay West 9, Cameron Welch 9, Conner Johnson 9, Lake Reid 6, Braydee Brooks 3, and Ethan Jenkins 2. Brandon Jones and Noah Likens played but did not score.

Macon travelled to Nashville to begin Christmas tournament play at the Lipscomb Classic on Dec 14th. In the first game the Tigerettes drew powerhouse Div II Ensworth. The Tigerettes fell behind 7-14 and 26-34 after the first two periods. They simply could not mount a charge on this good team. The 13 turnovers and shooting only 13 of 19 from the free throw line didn’t help either. The Tigerettes got their second loss of the season by a score of 52-67.

Scoring was: Carter 19, Gregory 17, Mix 6, Shoulders 6, King 3, and E. Ashburn 1. Taylor Ward played but did not score.

The Tigers got to play Brentwood Academy in their first game. The Eagles were simply too good, outshooting Macon 51% to 27% and collecting 13 steals from the Tigers. Final score was 79-30.

Scoring was: Welch 11, West 8, Brooks 5, Johnson 4, and Kyson Herald 2. Reid, Ballou, Likens, Jenkins, Jones, Gavin Clayborne, Dawson Shrum, Landon Colter, Cody Cothron, and Noah Hale all played but did not score.

The Tigerettes would rebound against the AAA Summit Spartans on Dec 15th. Macon pushed out to a 17-10 lead after the 1st quarter and held a 33-30 lead at the break. The Tigerettes managed to keep pace with the Lady Spartans and they halftime margin proved to be the difference. Final score Macon 56 Summit 53.

Scoring was Carter 23, Shoulders 15, Gregory 10, and Mix 8. King, Ward, E. Ashburn, and J. Ashburn all played but did not score.

Saturday night the Tigers played the host Lipscomb Mustangs. Their scoring woes continued as they unly managed five in the 1st, 8 in the 2nd, 7 in the 3rd, and 13 in the final period. This was a sloppy game with both teams committing double digits turnovers and steals. Lipscomb won by a final score of 49-33.

Scoring was Reid 9, Brooks 5, Jenkins 4, Welch 3, Johnson 3, Clayborne 3, West 2, Shurm 2, and Likens 2.

The week before Christmas the Tigerettes are making their trip to Phoenix, AZ to play in the Nike Tournament of Champions on Dec 19th to 22nd and the Tigers travel to Gatlinburg to play in the Smokey Mountain Classic Dec 20th to 22nd.
