Tigerettes Snap Six Year Drought

The Macon County Tigerettes snapped a six year losing streak this past week.

Macon County closed out the regular season with District 8AA opponents DeKalb County and Upperman.

On Tuesday Feb 5th MCHS traveled to Smithville to face DeKalb County. The Tigerettes seem to have DeKalb’s number as they had little trouble beating them earlier in the season. It was 24-11 at the half and Macon cruised to a 63-32 win. Of note, Macon had 16 steals and forced 22 turnovers in the game.

Scoring was: Keeley Carter 18, Jalynn Gregory 17, Abby Shoulders 7, Jamie Ashburn 7, Taylor Ward 5, McKaylee Mix 4, Briea Crouch 3, and Marah King 2. Graci Scott, Kinsley Arnett, Emily Ashburn, and Myle Crowder played but did not score.

DeKalb beat Macon earlier in the year 61-39. It appeared that that might happen again as DeKalb led 32-22 at halftime. However Macon got hot and DeKalb went stone cold. Macon outscored their opponents 32-13 in the final 16 minutes to get the win 54-45.

Scoring was Cameron Welch 14, Braydee Brooks 13, Trent Cook 12, Lake Reid 7, Kelton Ballou 6, and Clay West 2. Noah Hale and Connor Johnson played but did not score.

The final game of the season came on Thursday Feb 7th as Upperman came to town. The Lady Bees were enjoying a 14 game win streak, in which the last Tigerette win was on Dec 10th, six years ago in 2013.

After a poor showing and a loss earlier in the season, the Tigerettes came to play. They took the lead in the first few minutes and never trailed. Up 10 early, Upperman cut the lead to 12-17 at the break. The Tigerettes kept up the relentless defensive pressure to force key turnovers in the second half. In front of the frenzied crowd of students and fans, Macon goes on to win 48-34.

Despite Upperman shooting 50% from the field, they simply couldn’t match the intensity and determination of the Tigerettes. It was also key that Gregory was 6 of 6 and Shoulders 2 of 2 from the free throw line down the stretch.

Scoring was: Carter 15, Gregory 13, J. Ashburn 9, Abby Shoulders 8, and Mix 3. King played but did not score.

The Upperman boys are a very good team and have gotten even better from the last time Macon fans got to see them. The Tigers played hard but simply couldn’t out-match the team they were facing. Upperman won easily behind center Alex Rush and his game high 30 points by a final score of 69-53.

Scoring was: Cook 18, Reid 10, Balou 10, Welch 5, Brooks 5, Johnson 3, Gavin Clayborne 1, and Dawson Shrum 1. West, Hale, Noah Likens, Landon Colter, Cody Cothron and Brandon Jones all played but did not score.

Both teams will now head into the post season. The Tigers will finish the regular season seeded #5 and the Tigerettes will have a coin flip with Upperman to see who will be seeded #1. Both teams will travel to Tennessee Tech this week for district games.
