Clay County Woman in Critical Condition

By Debbie Gregory

As of presstime, a young Clay County woman is listed in critical condition at the Vanderbilt Medical Center Trauma Unit, following a one vehicle crash on Saturday night, February 23.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, heavy rain was a factor in this 8:00 p.m. crash that happened on Hwy. 52, approximately a mile past the Macon County line.

The THP report states that 20-year-old Tracy A. Smith, of Moss, Tn., was driving an eastbound 2015 Ford Fusion on Hwy. 52 West in Clay County, when her vehicle struck a tree that had previously fallen across the roadway, blocking both east and westbound lanes of travel. Her vehicle then traveled off the right side of the road striking a rock/stone embankment coming to rest facing east.

She was transported by ground ambulance to Macon Community Hospital and then transferred to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition on Monday afternoon.

The Macon County Sheriffs Office and the Macon County EMS responded to the scene for mutual aid.

Trooper Ruben Basaldua was the investigating officer. Tracy Smith was wearing her seatbelt.
