Lawn Mower Vs. Tractor Trailer

By Debbie Gregory

A Lafayette man was injured when his riding lawn mower struck a tractor trailer rig on Union Camp Road, while he was mowing on Monday morning.

Marty Wright, of Macon County, was driving eastbound in a Goodman’s Trucking 2003 Peterbilt tractor trailer rig, when he merged over into the westbound lane due to Mr. Robert Reed, age 88, mowing his yard at 770 Union Camp Road.

According to Sgt. Ashley Mercer, of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Mr. Reed said that the wheel on his lawn mower locked up causing the mower to come out into the road and strike the tractor trailer in the passenger side front trailer tandem tire and wheel, which knocked the lawn mower partially in the yard and the east bound lane. Mr. Reed was thrown off the lawn mower and landed in the road.

Mr. Reed was transported for medical treatment. Mr. Wright wasn’t hurt.

Those responding to the scene were the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Macon County Sheriff’s Department, Macon County EMS, Lafayette Fire Department, and the Macon County Chronicle.

Trooper Cody Ballard was the investigating officer and he was assisted by Sgt. Mercer.
