Erratic Driver Found in Possession of Marijuana

By Jessie Williams

A man believed to be driving under the influence was arrested for possession of a schedule VI drug last week following a traffic stop near the Lafayette Public Square.

According to Detective Shane Gregory of the Macon County Sheriff’s Department, a caller reported a driver that was possibly under the influence on Scottsville Road on October 3.

The caller stated the driver nearly hit a light pole and ran another car off the road.

When the vehicle approached the public square, detective Gregory pulled behind the maroon and white GMC pickup truck. The officer says he witnessed the driver cross the center line several times and almost hit a parked car on College Street before making a traffic stop on the vehicle.

As detective Gregory approached the truck, he smelled a strong odor of marijuana.

The driver, identified as 44-year-old Zachary William Stone, allegedly maintained he was not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and gave consent for authorities to search his vehicle.

While Stone was standing outside the vehicle, the officer says he noticed a baggie hanging out of Stone’s pants pocket.

The baggie contained a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana.

The substance weighed approximately 1.8 ounces.

Upon a search of Stone’s vehicle, authorities found a syringe, and Stone explained he was diabetic.

An ambulance was called to the scene and it was discovered that Stone’s sugar level was low, which may have been the cause of his erratic driving.

He was treated and was brought to jail for possession of a Schedule VI drug.

Stone’s bond was set at $500, and he is scheduled to appear in general sessions court on Dec. 4.
