Man Charged With Stealing, Stripping Vehicle

By Jessie Williams

Twenty-nine-year-old Willie Don Barrett, of Lafayette, was charged with theft of property valued between $2,500 and $10,000, vandalism over $5,000 and altering a serial number on October 7 after allegedly stealing and stripping a 2001 Chevy Tahoe.

According to a report filed by Officer Kyle Petty of the Macon County Sheriff’s Department, the Tahoe was reported stolen on September 21, 2019.

On October 3, 2019 Officer Petty was dispatched to a farm located on Akersville Rd. after reports of an abandoned, stripped vehicle that was found on the property.

Upon his arrival, the officer found a Chevy Tahoe that had been nearly completely stripped from the back doors to the front bumper. The report states that the VIN plate was also removed.

The owner of the stolen Tahoe did identify the vehicle as hers by the personal items that were left in the vehicle and damage that had occurred prior to the theft.

During the course of law enforcement’s investigation, a witness provided a sworn statement that named Barrett, and another man, as the two people he or she saw stripping the vehicle on September 21 at the same location the vehicle was found by police.

Barrett was taken into custody on October 7, 2019. His bond is set at $10,000, and he is scheduled to appear in general sessions court on Oct. 30.
