Tigers & Tigerettes End Regular Season

The regular season came to an end this past week for Macon County.

They hosted DeKalb County and travelled to Upperman to end the season.

On Tuesday Feb 11th Macon hosted their last game of the regular season against DeKalb County. The Tigerettes came out sluggish and it took them a long while to get their game in gear. They trailed almost the entire first quarter, ending the period on an 8-0 run taking the lead 16-12.

Then the Tigerettes full court press started to speed up the game. Forcing 13 first half turnovers from the Lady Tigers, Macon was able to pull away and led 39-20 at the half.

In the second half there was more of the slow paced half-court game. However that favored the Tigerettes with their lead. The bench was emptied early and the Tigerettes went on to win 67-33.

Scoring was: Keeley Carter 26, Jalynn Gregory 15, Marah King 6, Saranda Woodson 6, Jamie Ashburn 4, Myle Crowder 3, Graci Scott 3, Kinsley Arnett 2, Emily Ashburn 1, and Abby Shoulders 1. McKaylee Mix and Cadence Carter played but did not score.

The boys lost at DeKalb in double overtime earlier in the year. Both teams had a hard time scoring and it was 0-0 over halfway thru the first period. Meador and Reid both had foul troubles in the first half and Macon went to the break trailing 16-19.

In the third quarter, DeKalb committed quite a few fouls and Macon did not capitalize on their free throws. The Tigers began the fourth quarter trailing 31-38. The Tigers slowly made some shots and DeKalb didn’t. Reid tied the game with 18 seconds left and DeKalb couldn’t get a good shot. So these two teams headed for overtime again.

With leading scorer Brooks having fouled out, senior Lake Reid decided to make the best of what could be his last high school game at Nera White and asserted himself. He made the plays and willed the Tigers to a 58-52 win.

Scoring was: Lake Reid 21, Braydee Brooks 19 points and 12 rebounds, Connor Johnson 13, and Noah Hale 5. Dylan Chupp, Isaac Meador, Dawson Shrum, and Cody Cothron all played but did not score.

The final game of the regular season was at Upperman on Thursday Feb 13th. It was yet another top five matchup against ranked teams in Class AA. The Tigerettes came out focused and jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the hostile environment in Baxter. The Tigerettes were playing smothering defense and held the #3 ranked team in AA to only 11 first half points. Macon led 27-11 at the break.

After halftime both teams came out and made minor adjustments. Both the Lady Bees and the Tigerettes had spurts and the 16 point lead was trimmed to 36-26 heading into the final eight minutes. The Lady Bees applied heavy pressure and the Tigerettes made a few turnovers. The lead was cut to five and with about four minutes left in the game Coach White put his girls in “clock killing” mode. Upperman was forced to foul and the Tigerettes made their free throws. Macon wins another big game by a score of 42-35 and finishes the regular season undefeated and in first place in the district.

Scoring was: K. Carter 25, King 6, Shoulders 6, and Gregory 5. Woodson, J. Ashburn, and Mix all played but did not score.

Upperman’s boys team is ranked as the #3 team in Class AA and they looked like it. Macon simply had no answer to the Bees pressure. Turnovers and missed shots led to a 50-25 deficit for the Tigers. Upperman even started sprinkling in their bench in the second period.

More of the same in the second half. The Tigers committed 25 turnovers, shot just 18% from the three point arc, and got out rebounded 29-18. Tigers lose by a final score of 90-38 to a really good Bee squad.

Scoring was: Johnson 11, Brooks 8, Reid 7, Hale 5, Meador 4,and Shrum 3. Chupp, Cothron, Rawley Ritchie, and Hayden Wix all played but did not score.

Due to a scheduling conflict with Tennessee Tech the first round of games will be played at Watertown High School. Check the brackets for information on place and time for each team.
