Local law enforcement confirmed that a man and a 15-year-old Macon County High School student drowned last Thursday night in the Shiloh swimming hole just off Westfork Creek Rd.
According to Macon County Sheriff Mark Gammons, 32-year-old Gaudencio Lopez Gomez advised friends he was going to the swimming hole Thursday night.
When the friends arrived, it’s reported that Gomez was struggling to swim in the water.
A 15-year-old female at the scene attempted to save him but she was unable to save him or herself.
Officers and rescue workers arrived on the scene just before midnight, and recovered the teen’s body. They recovered the man’s body around 1:30 a.m.
There were two witnesses at the scene.
Macon County High School held a vigil in memory of the freshman on Saturday, June 12, in front of the school. The school is also providing counselors to any student who many need or want help on Tuesday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Room 204.
