Tigers and Tigerettes in 9AAA Tournament

The basketball teams at Macon County High School competed in the District 9-3A tournament last week. Four teams from 9-3A advance out of the district tournament to the region.

The Tigers, #5 seed, had basically a play-in game against the #4 seeded Greenbrier Bobcats. Macon just cannot seem to break thru that wall keeping them from winning a close game. The Tigers lost 63-52 and will not advance in the post-season tournament.

The Tigerettes ended up the #2 seed in the tournament even though there was a three-way tie for first in the regular season. This meant they played against #3 seed Portland, who they lost to in the last regular season game of the season five days before.

Scoring in this game was once again at a premium. Both teams struggled with the game tied 7-7 at the end of the first eight minutes and Portland leading 15-12 at the break. The three point lead expanded to six heading into the final quarter and the Lady Panthers were able to hit six of their eight free throws to hold off the Tigerettes. Final score Portland 34 Macon Co 27.

Scoring for the Tigerettes was: Laityn Kirby 5, Katie Jo Shockley 3, Kaydence Walrond 5, Natalie Green 8, and Sheridan Ellis 6. Kaylee Slayton played but did not score.

With the loss the Tigerettes are scheduled to face off against Station Camp on Feb 19th to determine the number three/four seed in the tournament.

Last week three Tigerettes were announced for the 9-3A All-District team. Laityn Kirby, Natalie Green, and Kaydence Walrond were all selected for 2023-2024. Congratulations.
