Macon County Takes Gold in TN Special Olympics
By Misty Green
The Tennessee Special Olympics were held on May 17-18 at Lipscomb University and Macon County’s own Gracie Woodall earned the gold medal in the bocce ball competition.
Special Olympics is a movement built on inclusion, where every person is accepted and welcomed, regardless of ability or disability. Through the Special Olympics, the world is made into a better, healthier, and more joyful place through the power of sport.
Special Olympics Tennessee (SOTN) offers sports training and competition in 16 Olympic-style sports to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Individuals eight years old and up can compete in local and state competitions. The Young Athletes program is available for children with and without intellectual disabilities, ages 2-7.
This year, Macon County earned gold through hard work of the bocce teammates.
“Gracie took Gold in doubles competition and bronze in team competition,” Special Olympics Area 21 Director Kim Watford said.
“This was her first year playing bocce ball but she competed like a seasoned veteran and I am so proud of her!”
Watford explained as the Director of Sumner and Macon county, she would love to have more athletes participate from Macon County.
“Macon had three classes compete in our spring games at Station Camp high school on April 19th and they all did amazing. Competitions were held during a two-day event, and the rain held off allowing bocce ball and track & field to complete their events, which included constant appearances from the cicadas also wanting to join in the fun-filled events. Memories were made from day one’s competitions, opening ceremonies, cheering on all the athletes in an Olympic town and a fun victory celebration ensured everyone had a great time. Thank you to our state office for all their hard work.”
Gracie Woodall’s doubles partner was Nick Damianoff, and her other two team players were Alex Rachal and Emily Prudden.
“Now we can take a little break and enjoy our summer,” Watford said, “And get ready for another exciting season as we start back up late summer with Fall games scheduled for October.
