Commission Plays Key Role as County Continues to Grow

As Macon County continues to grow and develop, the Macon County Planning Commission plays an increasingly visible role in decisions that can affect property owners, builders, developers and residents throughout the county.

The Planning Commission reviews matters involving land use, development, subdivisions and other planning issues that come before the county.

When appropriate, the Planning Commission makes recommendations concerning regulations or policies to the Macon County Commission. The County Commission then considers those recommendations and takes the official action necessary under county and state law.

Once applicable regulations are adopted, the Macon County Codes Enforcement Office is responsible for administering and enforcing many of those requirements. In

some cases, when compliance or enforcement becomes a legal matter, the county attorney may also become involved on behalf of Macon County.

The relationship among the Planning Commission, County Commission and Codes Enforcement Office becomes particularly important as new homes and other structures are built, existing properties are developed or remodeled, and growth continues throughout Macon County.

Decisions made during the planning process can ultimately affect how development occurs and what requirements property owners and builders must meet.

For that reason, knowing who serves on the Planning Commission — and understanding the commission’s role in county government — is important to county residents.
