The High Cost of Low Living

We hear countless remarks today about the high coast of living. However, we fail to hear enough and warn of the high cost of low living.

Benjamin Franklin once observed, “What maintains one vice would bring up two children.” Stop right here! Don’t read another word of this issue of Viewpoints until you have pondered seriously Franklin’s statement.

As expensive as children are, vices cost much more. Sadly, many children in Macon, Sumner, and throughout this country go without food and clothing they need, because they have a father or mother who spends money needed for these things on  alcohol, drugs, the lottery, and other vices.

The wise man Solomon wrote, “For the drunkard and glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags” (Proverbs 23:21). Yes, and his children will be clothed in rags. Furthermore, Solomon declared, “He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich” (Proverbs 21:17).

It is important that we realize the evil of the above mentioned vices and that we understand fully the consequences of low living. Low living is expensive. The dollars and cents we put into churches, private Christian Schools, and education is the best money we can spend.

Turtles and snails are not known for their speed. I once read somewhere of this snail that was crossing the road and was run over by a turtle. Regaining consciousness in the emergency room, he was asked what caused the accident, and the snail replied, “I really don’t know, I can’t remember.” Then the snail added, “You see, it all happened so fast.”

One day America is going to wake-up from her long uncaring sleep, and she will remember how evil, not fast, but little by little, over the last 30 or 40 years, took control of Her children and robbed them of their health, morals and citizenship. Low living is expensive.
