21st Annual Lioness Club Variety Show, March 18

Mark your calendars for one of Macon County’s highly anticipated evenings of family fun as the 21st Annual Lafayette Lioness Club Variety Show kicks off on Saturday, March 18 at 6 p.m. For the past 20 years, this event has provided audiences of all ages with side-splitting comedy and great music – all performed by local talent. This years show will be held in the Macon County Junior High School Auditorium with Will Nichols emceeing the evening’s events.

Some memorable acts from years past will take the stage again and some new performers as well. The acts this year include Maria Duffer, Jacy Russell, The Hillbilly Trio, Makayla McDowell, (niece of country singer, Rodney McDowell), The Lugg Nutts, Randy Dillehay, Elvis, The Streak and the Flat Rock Ramblers among others. In addition to an evening of entertainment, our own Miss Hillbilly, Savanna Harper, will be hosting a silent auction where guests can place their bids throughout the night. The winning bids will be announced following the show. A live auction will also take place during the show’s intermission.

Admission to the event is $7 and tickets can be purchased in advance at Citizens Bank Main Office until March 17. They can also be purchased the evening of the event, when doors open at 5 p.m.

A concession stand featuring homemade baked goods – such as fried pies, cakes and other delicious treats – along with BBQ, chips and drinks will be available for guests.

“This event caters to all age groups,” said committee member Teresa Whittemore. “All of the entertainment is family friendly and very entertaining. One of my favorite things about the show is that it showcases some of our local talent on stage. It amazes me at the number of talented people we have right here in Macon County. We definitely want to say a big thank you to all of the entertainers for sharing their talent and time with us. We would also like to thank each of the sponsors and contributors who have so generously supported our show each year.”

The Annual Variety Show is the largest fundraiser hosted by the Lioness Club all year, largely due to show participants who never cease to entertain the crowd. “We hope to have a full house this year to celebrate our 21st year of our variety show,” Whittemore remarked. “You definitely don’t want to miss out on seeing this year’s acts!”

Proceeds from the show will go towards the clubs’ service projects and to provide diagnosis and eye surgery, glasses and hearing aids to those in need. The Club also makes contributions to Vanderbilt Childrens Eye Center and the Tennessee School for the Blind. The ladies of this club work hard all year to raise funds through service projects for sight and hearing, such as the Variety Show, and have purchased numerous pairs of glasses and hearing aids for Macon County residents, held Valentine’s Day and Halloween parties for the local nursing home, given scholarships to graduating Macon County Seniors, and assisted with the local Back Pack Program, Nurses’ Closet Program and School Supply Program. They have also donated to Santa for All Seasons, Lions’ White Cane Program and Middle Tennessee Sight Service. All year long club members also collect old eyeglasses, hearing aids and cell phones to be refurbished. These are just some of the projects the club participates in, as its members live by the creed “Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion.”

This year, the International Lions Club is celebrating 100 years of service. Their motto is “We Serve” and the Lafayette Lioness Lions Club does just that for the people of Macon County. So show your support, and come on out to enjoy a night of excitement and family fun and help celebrate the 21st year of the Variety Show.
