5 Little Monkey Celebrates 12 Years
Local families seem to look forward to this bi-annual event started by Martha Doss and Karen Burrow. Once both stay-at-home moms, they enjoyed shopping at consignment sales for their own children and decided to start one right here in town. “We came up with the sale name because of our 5 children. Martha has 3, Eli, Jake and Lydia, and I have 2, Erin and Ben” says Karen.
In the spring of 2001, the first sale was held in Martha’s own basement with about 40 consignors. “We really didn’t know what to expect, but were pretty pleased with the results,” says Martha. “We had alot of late nights in that basement,” Martha laughs. The sale quickly outgrew the basement and a perfect location was found in the Sally Wells building at the fairgrounds. They’ve consistently held 2 sales each year for the last 12 years. You’ll find clothing items ranging from newborn to junior sizes, shoes, toys, bedding and even furniture. Consignors can bring in basically any item that relates to a child that’s in current style and good condition. Ladieswear and home decor are other categories that have been added to attract all shoppers.
Martha and Karen want to mention that they couldn’t do it all without the help of their families and volunteers. “It’s a lot of hard work,” says Karen “but people really seem to enjoy having the opportunity to sell items they no longer need, while at the same time replenishing their childrens’ closets for the next season. The best part is that they never even have to leave town.”
Now celebrating their 25th sale and averaging 150 consignors, their next sale is this week on March 14-16 which will be for spring/summer items. The fall/winter sale is scheduled for August 22-24.
