Officers from the Lafayette Police Department and Macon County Sheriffs Department were involved in a dangerous pursuit last Thursday evening that ended with the arrest of 30-year-old Kirton Ashley Walsh, 29-year-old Josie Lee McCormick and 30-year-old Daniel Wayne McCormick, all of Lafayette.

The incident began after Lafayette police were notified at approximately 9:30 p.m. of a reckless driver traveling on Highway 52, and discovered a vehicle matching the description.

An officer proceeded to pull behind the suspect vehicle and stop the driver near Huston’s Restaurant, but the driver sped off, and a dangerous high-speed pursuit ensued.

As the chase approached the Jimtown Road area, back up officers were called in from the Macon County Sheriffs Department and the fleeing suspects were stopped at the Ambulance Service in Red Boiling Springs.

As officers exited their vehicles, the driver shifted gears into reverse, ramming the vehicle of LPD Officer Stacy Woodard.
The unpredictable situation forced officers to open fire, but the driver was able to free his vehicle after attempting to run over officers and crash into law enforcement vehicles.

Pursuing the vehicle back onto Highway 52, towards Lafayette, Officer Mark Bartley of the Macon County Sheriffs Department and Officer Stacy Woodard were able to spin the speeding vehicle into a guardrail to detour the driver from causing further harm.

The driver, Daniel McCormick, was found to be wanted in three states and two Tennessee counties according to Macon County Sheriff Mark Gammons, and the female passenger, Josie McCormick, was wanted in Pennsylvania.

Because shots were fired during the incident, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation did perform an investigation and contacted Sheriff Gammons last Friday, reporting that officers responded appropriately and were able to return to work.

“We’re very lucky that the situation turned out the way it did,” Sheriff Gammons remarked.

None of the officers or suspects involved in the pursuit were injured.

Daniel McCormick, was charged with two counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated domestic assault and one count of evading arrest. There are currently no charges against passenger Kirton Walsh and Josie McCormick is being held for charges in another county.
