A two-vehicle accident occurred on Highway 10 South around 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night, August 28th, sending one victim to Vanderbilt Medical Center, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Involved in the crash were Howard Cartwright, of Flippin Drive, here in Lafayette, who was behind the wheel of a dark green Mitsubishi and David Smith, also of Lafayette, who was driving a silver Chrysler Sebring CX1.

“We had to stablize the Mitsubishi to keep it from going down the embankment,” said Chief Keith Scruggs, “and we had to stop the fuel leak, before we could get to the driver. I had ten men on the scene from the Lafayette Fire Department and five members of the Rescue Squad.”

The Lafayette Police Department and the Macon County Sheriffs Department closed off all north and south bound traffic from the top of the hill in the Lafayette city limits to Meadorville Church, approximately three miles from the site, with vehicles detoured to the Ferguson Hill Road.

Trooper Neil Ferguson, of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, was the investigating officer with assistance from Sgt. Ashley Mercer.

Those responding to the scene included the Macon County Sheriffs Department, Lafayette Fire Department, Macon County Rescue Squad, Macon County Emergency Management Service, THP, North Central Telephone Company, and the Macon County Chronicle.
