In honor of Veterans Day on Thursday, November 11th, several Macon County events have been scheduled to honor our local veterans and their families. In the weeks to come, and always, may we all take the time to pay tribute to these brave men and women, the sacrifices they’ve made for our country and the freedoms we enjoy every day.

2010 Macon County Veterans Day events:

Citizens Bank Annual Veterans’ Breakfast – Thursday, November 4th

Citizens Bank will pay tribute to all veterans and their spouses on Thursday, November 4th with its 10th annual Veterans’ Breakfast from 7:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. at the Citizens Bank main office in Lafayette. At 9:30 a.m., a short patriotic program will be held on the front lawn, and John Keys, Tennessee Commissioner of Veterans Affairs, will also speak during the program. Citizens Bank will pay special honor to World War II veterans in attendance, and all WWII veterans in the area are encouraged to attend.

“Over the years this has become one of biggest events of year for Citizens Bank,” said Citizens Bank President Pete Williston. “We look forward to this all year long and are expecting between 300 and 400 guests. We, at Citizens Bank, are both humbled and thankful to honor our veterans with this breakfast.”

Macon Bank & Trust Veteran’s Day Breakfast – Saturday, November 6th

Macon Bank & Trust will be honoring our local veterans on Saturday, November 6th, in the Sally Wells Building located on the Macon County Fairgrounds. From 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m., veterans and their spouses are invited to join Macon Bank employees for breakfast and entertainment by The G-Cords.

“The annual Veterans Day Breakfast is our small way of saying thanks to those who have sacrificed so much so that we are able to enjoy the freedoms we have today,” said Macon Bank & Trust President Radford West. “We look forward to seeing our veterans and their spouses there!” To make reservations for yourself or your spouse, call Debbie Mason at 666-6448.

Palace Care & Rehab – Wednesday, November 10th

Palace Care and Rehab of Red Boiling Springs will host a special Veteran's Day Service on Wednesday, November 10 at 2 p.m. "It is our great privilege once again to honor these brave men and women who have served our great nation," said Rita Crabtree, Administrator.  After the service, refreshments will be served in the dining room. Families and friends are encouraged to attend and share their special comments during the service and are welcome to bring pictures that they would like to share. A special POA/MIA table will represent those who are prisoners or missing in action. "We hope that the community will come out and support this special group of veterans. While visiting, please stop by our wonderful Veteran's Hall of Honor," said Crabtree.

Lafayette Elementary School – Wednesday, November 10th

Lafayette Elementary School will host a patriotic Veterans Day program on Wednesday, November 10th, beginning at 9:30 a.m in the gymnasium. The program is open to all veterans, parents and the community and will include singing by LES 4th and 5th grade students, short skits and a slideshow of thank you letters written by students.

Veterans Day Parade – Thursday, November 11th

The 2010 Veterans Day Parade for Macon County will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2010. The theme for this year’s Parade is “Faces of Freedom.”  As in previous years, the parade will kickoff at 11 a.m. at the Macon County Courthouse with an opening ceremony, the Laying of the Veteran’s Day Wreath, and the playing of Taps. The parade will begin from the Courthouse immediately after this. It will depart the square via College Street (Hwy 10 South) to Hwy 52, turn west on Hwy 52 to Ellington Drive, turn right onto Ellington Drive and then proceed to Church Street. The parade will head east on Church Street and end at Key Park.  Once at Key Park, there will be a closing ceremony/celebration with a guest speaker and entertainment followed by refreshments.  If you are going to have a parade float or other entries in the parade please inform Mike Scott, the County Veterans Officer at 666-4480.  Lineup for the floats and other entries will be down Main Street starting at the corner of Public Square.  Parade lineup begins at 10 a.m.

“We are looking forward to a great parade and it is our sincere wish to make this a fitting tribute to our veterans,” said Veterans Service Officer Mike Scott.

Macon County Sheriffs Department

A Veterans Day ceremony will be at 4 p.m. on Thursday, November 11th, outside of the Macon County Justice Center.

Westside Elementary School Veterans Day Program – Thursday, November 11th

Westside Elementary School will celebrate our local veterans on Thursday, November 11 at 1 p.m. with a patriotic program open to the community. Those in attendance will watch a DVD slideshow of local veterans and their families, complete with patriotic music and images. Each veteran’s image will be accompanied by their family’s names, service information and their relationship to a Westside student.
