As the war on drugs continues here in our rural community, the Macon County Sheriffs Department and the Lafayette Police Department have joined forces to wipe out this deadly epidemic that is killing our young people and sending countless individuals to jail for extended periods of time, virtually ruining their lives forever.

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on Friday morning, August 12th, officers of the Sheriffs Department and the LPD executed three search warrants on the apartments at 924 Scottsville Road and one at 419 Union Camp Road, later gaining permission to search another apartment, after weeks of investigation led to evidence of methamphetamine manufacture.

According to Macon County Sheriff Mark Gammons, upon entry one apartment had an active lab and four other methamphetamine labs had already cooked down, with components found in each search. A total of ten people were arrested for their involvement in manufacturing meth and one individual was taken into custody for interfering with the investigation. Five vehicles were seized, along with a shot gun, electronic devices and an undisclosed amount of cash.

“We also contacted DCS for a small child that was unfortunately at the scene,” said the Sheriff, “and Gene Turner, city animal control, was called to pick up two dogs.”

Those arrested included Danny Jo Gregory, age 42, of Union Camp Road, who was charged with tampering with evidence, theft of property, promotion of meth, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held on $50,00 bond and he is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on August 31, 2011.

“Meth is a growing problem in the State of Tennessee and Macon County is not alone,” Sheriff Gammons said on Monday morning, “ and we are doing everything in our power to shut down as many methamphetamine labs as we can. Captain Amalfitano and I assigned several officers at both locations last Friday, due to the fact that there were a lot of suspects involved, who tend to become violent when they are under the influence.”

“I would like to commend both departments on a good job in our attempt to get drugs off the streets of Macon County,” Gammons said. “Anyone that suspects or knows of any meth labs or other illegal drug activity please call the Sheriffs Department at 615-666-3325 or the Lafayette Police Department at 615-666-4725 and we urge all citizens to call your Representative or Congressman to ask for stiffer laws for methamphetamine sale and manufacture.
