In a coordinated effort, the Lafayette Police Department assisted Trousdale County Sheriff Ray Russell and his officers, in a drug roundup conducted by the 15th Judicial Drug Task Force on Wednesday, October 26th. As part of a year-long investigation, the roundup began last week, after 40 people were indicted by a Grand Jury for various drug charges. Also assisting was the Carthage Police Department and the Smith County Sheriffs Office.

“We had three from our department that went to Trousdale County,” stated Lt. Kevin Woodard, of the Lafayette Police Department, “myself, along with Detective Jason Roberts and Officer Stacy Woodard. This investigation was all conducted in Trousdale County, although there were three from Lafayette who were indicted and eight more are also involved, but their names are being withheld due to further investigation.”

Sheriff Russell stated that the Task Force took the charges to the Grand Jury, who handed down the indictments, and the bond was set. “We began rounding the suspects up,” said the Sheriff, “and we picked up 25 alone on Wednesday, October 26th. At this time, some subjects are still at large, but those already apprehended all made bond except for one, when they appeared for arraignment last Friday morning, October 28th.”

“Throughout the years I’ve noticed the drug problem gradually getting worse,” Sheriff Russell remarked, “and I remember in 1992 when crack cocaine hit the streets here in Trousdale County. There appears to be more meth arrests in Macon County, but we deal more commonly with pills and marijuana here in Hartsville. We will continue the fight in the war against drugs and my team will arrest them one at a time, and I promise we will catch up with the drug dealers sooner or later.”

“I would like to thank everyone for their help,” Russell said, “including the Lafayette Police Department, Carthage Police Department, and the Smith County Sheriffs Office, along with my team as well.”

Added Lt. Woodard, “It was a successful roundup and we are sending out a message that drugs are not going to be tolerated in any county.”
