The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a man who was hit by a car around the 642 block of Rocky Mound Road late Friday afternoon, May 17.
April South was behind the wheel of a Honda Accord traveling north on Rocky Mound Road when her boyfriend 34-year-old James Chitwood was struck by the car she was driving. Air Evac and Vanderbilt Lifeflight declined to fly due to weather, so he was carried by ground ambulance to Nashville. He passed away on Sunday, May 19 at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
The couple was living in the Hanestown Community in Macon County. Ms. South, age 37, was arrested that night for driving on a suspended license
Those responding to the scene were the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Macon County Sheriffs Office, Macon County EMS, West Macon County Rescue Squad and the Macon County Chronicle.
This is an on-going investigation.
James Richard Chitwood is survived by his mother, Joan Louise & James Presley of Westmoreland; daughter, Tara Alexandria Chitwood of Lafayette; brother, Johnny Marshall of Portland; two step sisters, Ashley Presley of Portland and Angel Presley of Hendersonville; nieces, Delana Marshall and Nicole White both of Portland. Funeral services were incomplete at press time.
