Black rolling smoke could be seen from the public square when a Scottsville Road building caught on fire last Tuesday afternoon.

On January 19, the Lafayette Fire Department was alerted at 1:25 p.m. that a structure fire was reported at 922 Scottsville Road inside the Lafayette city limits.

The 24 x 30 one story metal building belonged to Scotty Keen and was occupied by Andy Green, both of Lafayette.

“My crew got on top of this fire and kept it from spreading to adjacent buildings,” said Lafayette Fire Chief Keith Scruggs. “However, the estimated loss was $50,000 building and contents.”

Chief Scruggs says that the cause of the fire is undetermined. The Chief was in charge of the scene and there was 12 firemen at the fire site.

The Lafayette Fire Department utilized Engine #3, tanker 29 and the ladder truck.

First responders, besides the fire department, were the Lafayette Police Department, Macon County Sheriffs Office, Macon County EMS, and the Macon County Chronicle.
