The Macon County Jr. High Girls Basketball Team completed the 2015-16 season by winning the T-N-T Class AAAA State Tournament in Springfield on Saturday, February 20th. The Tigerettes drew a bye in the first round and did not have to play until February 13th. They played DeKalb Co. Middle School, who upset the Tigerettes two weeks earlier in the James C. Haile tournament.
The Tigerettes jumped out to an early lead behind the inside play of Marah King and led 10 – 3 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter, led by the outside shooting of Jamie Ashburn, ended with the Tigerettes leading 19 – 3. After halftime, Dekalb Middle made some defensive adjustments and began to find the basket a little better. The Tigerettes managed to still score 8 points in the quarter and led 27 – 12 at the start of the last frame. The ladies from Lafayette held DeKalb scoreless in the fourth quarter and ended up winning by 21. The final score was 33 – 12.
Marah King led the Tigerettes with 16 points. She was followed by Jamie Ashburn with 7, Keeley Carter with 5, McKaylee Mix with 4, and Abby Shoulders with 1.
This created a match up with Winfree Bryant out of Lebanon in the finals. They appeared to be evenly matched as both teams had split with Mt. Juliet during the regular season. The game started out very close, with Winfree Bryant hitting two three-pointers on the way to a first quarter lead of 8 – 7. The Tigerettes inside duo of Keeley Carter and Marah King, plus a very active defense, took its toll in the girls from Winfree Bryant during the second quarter. By halftime, the Tigerettes led 15 – 8, holding Winfree scoreless during the second six minutes.
The game would never get any closer than that. The Tigerettes outscored Lady Aviators by seven and carried a 25 – 13 lead into the final quarter. The ladies from Macon finished strong and won by a score of 39 – 18. The combined efforts of Morgan Carter, who unselfishly ran the point, the wing play from Jamie Ashburn, McKaylee Mix, Olivia Belton, and Jalynn Gregory, and the inside game of Keeley Carter and Marah King was simply too much for Winfree Bryant to handle. The Tigetettes were led in scoring by Keeley Carter with 14, Marah King with 11, Olivia Belton with 7, McKaylee Mix with 4, and Jalynn Gregory with 3.
Making the All-State team from Macon was Jamie Ashburn, Keeley Carter, Morgan Carter, and Marah King. McKaylee Mix was name to the All-State Honorable Mention team. The Tigerettes finished a very successful season with a record of 20 – 2. They were the Cumberland Rim regular season and tournament champions and the T-N-T Class AAAA State Champions and were coached by Shawn Carter and Gary Carter.
