The wreck happened on Saturday night, May 28, with a call coming into emergency services at approximately 11:41 p.m.
According to lead investigator Trooper Tracy Donoho, 25-year-old Michael Allen Bentley, who lives in Macon County (Westmoreland mailing address), was driving a red 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck and his passenger was Benjamin Dylan Harper, 25, of Lafayette.
“Mr. Bentley was driving east on Green Valley Road when the passenger’s side tires traveled off the south side of the roadway,” Trooper Donoho told the Macon County Chronicle. “He over corrected causing the vehicle to go into a yaw and traveled off the north side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a large tree on the passenger’s side, and came to rest in a creek bed at the bottom of a 25-foot-deep ravine.”
Trooper Donoho said Michael Bentley crawled out of the ravine and made his way to a residence on the corner of Sparrow Road & Green Valley Road and knocked on the door to get help.
Mr. Bentley was flown out by a medical helicopter to a Nashville Hospital for treatment.
Mr. Harper was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“This investigation is still on-going,” said Trooper Donoho.
Trooper Donoho was assisted at the scene by Trooper Cody Ballard, THP Sgt. Billy Pierce, and CIRT Trooper Kyle Herren.
Those responding to the wreck site besides the Tennessee Highway Patrol was the Macon County Sheriffs Office, Macon County Rescue Squad, Macon County EMS, and the Macon County Chronicle.
