The 5th District volleyball tournament got underway last Tuesday night in the dog pound gym in Red Boiling Springs with host team taking on the Lady Tigerettes from Gordonsville. The other teams playing were top seeded Friendship Christian, second seed Watertown and third seed Trousdale County.
This if the first time the volleyball tournament has ever been held in Red Boiling Springs. There was a nice crowd on hand to see which two teams would advance to the region 4 later this week in Jackson County.
The first game featured the Lady Tigerettes from Gordonsville taking on the host team - the lady Bulldogs of Red Boiling Springs. This was a single elimination tournament so anything could happen.
With a nice crowd on hand, the Lady Bulldogs took to the floor to face Gordonsville. The lady Bulldogs started out playing terrible and before you knew it the Lady Tigerettes had built up an 8-point lead and from there they battled back but could not catch Gordonsville and lost the first game, 25-17, to take a 1-to-nothing lead in a best-3-of-5 match.
These Lady Bulldogs had better wake up or their season was going to end very soon. These Lady Bulldogs are laden with seniors and Coach Butler has had a problem all year getting them to play up to their potential.
The second game was like a new bunch of girls had put on the Red Boiling uniforms. These kids came out on fire and before Gordonsville knew what was going on the Lady Bulldogs had jumped out to an early 6-to-1 lead and never looked back as Red Boiling Springs took game 2 by a score of 25 to 11. The third game got the officials into the game as both sides were voicing their opinions about some calls, but the officials handled it. There were enough unenforced mistakes in the third game that sloppy play contributed to the Lady Tigerettes playing out of control and the Lady Bulldogs walked away with a 25-18 victory, therefore putting Gordonsville on the team bus home.
So far, the girls from Red Boiling Springs, who were doing most of the damage were Mayson Burgerner, Sherena Swoner, Faith Asberry, Hanna Peek, Lauren Patch, Kesha Davis, Cheyanne Henderson and Kristen Davis.
The third game and, as it turns out, the last one between RBS and Gordonsville was close early before the Lady Bulldogs started to wear the Tigerettes down and you could tell the girls from Smith County were just about through. The Lady Bulldogs had captured this contest by a score of 25-17, therefore sending Gordonsville home and now the real test will be how to handle the machine - the commanders from Friendship Christian.
The girls from Friendship Christian came out and completely dominated the much smaller kids from Red Boiling and had very little trouble as the jumped out to a early 11-6 lead and never looked back, trouncing Red Boiling Springs by a final score of 25-12. The second game was not much different as the much taller girls from Friendship appear on the way to the State Tournament. Friendship handled RBS by a score of 25-13.
The third and final score was Friendship 25 and RBS 7. In playing Friendship, you need to understand they have three girls that are 6ft-3-inches and all are great athletes. Coach Butler and Coach Patch do great job with these kids.Game stats from the district tournament: Kristin Davis - 8 kills, 4 blocks, 1 ace; Cheyanne Henderson - 2 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace; Kesha Davis - 4 kills, 2 aces; Lauren Patch – 12 kills, 9 aces; Hanna Peek - 5 kills, 3 aces; Faith Asberry - 5 kills, 23 assists, 2 aces; Ashlyn Murphy – 1 kill, 7 assists, 2 aces; Sherena Swoner - 45 defensive digs, 1 ace; Maysun Burgerer - 6 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace
