The Macon County High School Tigerettes volleyball team advanced to play Red Bank in the sectionals for a berth in the state tournament.In an exciting game, Macon lost a thrilling five set match and came as close as it ever has to making the state tournament.
On Tuesday October 14th Macon County hosted the Region 4AA tournament. The Tigerettes defeated Chattanooga Christian in four sets. The scores were: Set 1- Macon 20 Christian 25, Set 2- Macon 25 Christian 19, Set 3 Macon 25 Christian 21, and Set 4 – Macon 25 Christian 9. In the game Jordan Shockley, Brandi Garmon, and Kayley Scruggs all had 2 aces each. Kristyn Flippin had 18 kills and 27 digs while Jordyn Patterson had 39 assists.
With the win Macon advanced to the region finals against 2013 District 7AA, Region 4AA champs, and state qualifier Signal Mountain. The scores for the game were: Set 1-Macon 21 Signal 25, Set 2-Macon 22 Signal 25, Set 3-Macon 25 Signal 12, and Set 4-Macon 23 Signal 25. Sarah Carter and Brandi Garmon had 1 ace each while Kayley Scruggs had 10 blocks. Kristyn Flippin had 18 kills and 23 digs. By advancing to the Region 4AA finals, the Tigerettes earned a berth in the sectionals with a chance to advance to the state tournament for the first time since 2008.
On Thursday October 16th the Tigerettes traveled to Red Bank. Red Bank is the District 6AA and Region3AA champion and a 2013 state tournament qualifier. In a thrilling back and forth contest, the scores of the match were: Set 1-Macon 22 Red Bank 25, Set 2-Macon 25 Red Bank 22, Set 3-Macon 16 Red Bank 25, Set 4-Macon 25 Red Bank 22, and Set 5-Macon 9 Red Bank 15. Jordyn Patterson had 3 aces and 27 assists. Ashton Swindle and Kayley Scruggs had 8 blocks each and Kristyn Flippin had 17 kills and 43 digs.
These young ladies have had a wonderful season and played some excellent volleyball. “This year’s team really had a lot of potential,” said MCHS Head Coach Brittny Dodson. “They set high goals at the beginning of the season, to go to state, and they certainly came close. This team worked really hard this year and I am proud of them for going this far.” Dodson added, “Although we lost to a really good team in Red Bank in the sectionals, (our) team finished with a very successful season.”
